Swanson Ultra Whey Protein Review

It’s easy to read the nutrition profile on whey protein and if it ticks all the boxes health wise, come up with great reasons as to why it should be the whey of choice.  But if it tastes awful, even though it’s doing you good, chances are you will be tempted by that great tasting chocolate orange creme flavour…  You will find many reviews but some can be biased, I suspect some are fake, so in that respect I believe many whey protein reviews should be generally taken with a pinch of salt, as there is nothing like doing your own research.

Mainstream brands can contain dangerous concentrations of metals

Looking at this recent Consumer Reports study, it seems that samples taken from Muscle Milk Chocolate and Vanilla Creme powder contained four heavy metals, including arsenic, cadmium, mercury and lead.  Take this product or AS Myoplex Original Rich Dark Chocolate Shake product the recommended three times a day (more if you are pulse feeding) and you will reach inadvisable levels of these metals in your body.  (Cadmium is a known carcinogen and the body finds it difficult to eliminate, taking up to 20 years to get rid of only half of it).

Safe Protein

When the health scares came out I looked for alternatives.  My first whey protein review is Swanson Health Products Ultra Whey Protein.

Why is Whey Protein Concentrate preferable to Whey Protein Isolate?

Whole foods are minimally processed, in the case of whey, concentrates are whole protein products with with a high biological value.  Further, ensure that the milk is from grass fed cows that aren’t pumped with antibiotics and hormones.  This milk is rich in antioxidants, amino acids, metabolic supporting fats and immuno-peptides.  Much more so than grain fed cows.

Most whey protein isolates are heat and acid treated, which destroys any beneficial bugs, amino acids and fatty components.  It is made from putrid protein and as is unlikely to mix well, manufacturers add dangerous surfactants like those used in soap making to help the product emulsify in liquid.  They also tend to leave a nasty aftertaste which is why artificial sweeteners, sugar alcohols and flavours are added so they taste nice.  All of which have detrimental effects on the body.

  • Swanson Ultra Whey Protein is a whole protein product, made with the milk of hormone free, grass fed cows.  It tastes creamy and smells nice (I tested vanilla) and mixes instantly in water.  I used to suffer with bloating and a “full” heavy feeling, but not with this whey protein, it is easy to digest and I feel no ill effect afterwards.  There are no artificial sweeteners, only stevia, a plant based natural product.

At Health Monthly (UK supplier) if you buy three 420g  tubs at £19.99 per tub you get free delivery.  At Swanson Vitamins (US supplier) it is $14.99 per tub and postage is only $4.99.

As whey protein reviews go, this product makes me feel more energetic which is probably enhanced because I don’t feel the side effects of whey proteins isolates.  I like to mix it with psyllium husks for extra fibre and a banana/spoonful of peanut butter/coconut milk depending on my craving that day.  Unlike Dr Mercola’s Protein Shake Recipe I haven’t started using raw eggs yet…

On what basis do you think a CFM whey isolate is

    “Heat and acid treated” ?

Most whey protein isolates on the market ARE treated with heat and acid according to Ori Hofmekler. Even though CFM whey might seem like a better choice, All whey protein isolates are devoid of naturally occurring vitamins, alkalizing minerals and lipids, which are lost in the processing.

Have you tried Source Naturals True Whey (http://www.sourcenaturals.com/products/GP1836/). The main difference is that Swanson supposely is made from raw milk ???

I tested it and it’s also an awesome product, very creamy and tasty. Better than the Swanson I must say.

Let me know what you think.

Ordered it 2 weeks from Swanson ago with a eCoupon and got 1.99$ shipping, received it already , no duties 😉

I did not ordered the 29$/300g Organic stuff, just the Swanson Ultra Certified Grass-Fed Hormone-Free Chocolate Whey Protein 14.99$/420g , I suppose it’s still a hell of a product ?

    Wonderful ! Thanks anyway.

Great news! Yes I like that one, I only tried it in Vanilla but I’m sure the chocolate will be fine, let me know how you feel on it. My experience has been that I feel more energetic and as if more blood gets through to the muscles!
